MOORHEAD – The host Mississippi Delta Trojans shot 31 second-half free throws, including 22 over the final five minutes, to snap a four-game skid to the visiting Rangers and pull away for an 83-71 victory Tuesday night at J.T. Hall Coliseum.
MDCC improved to 7-8 overall and 2-2 in the division, while Northwest fell to 8-6 and 2-3 in the north.
Northwest led for most of the first, including a game-high 16-11 with 11:40 to play in the half on a
Montez Allen jumper.
What should've been an eight-point halftime lead for the Rangers was just two, as a clear and-one was wiped off the board for
Mike Robinson and Delta countered with a 3-pointer to make it a 29-27 game at the break.
The tough breaks continued in the second half as Delta benefited from nearly every whistle. The Rangers were hit with five of the first six fouls and the Trojans were already in the bonus with 13:11 to play in the game.
Northwest trailed by as many as 11 with just under seven minutes to play and got within five or six points on numerous occasions, but just couldn't get any closer as the Trojans constantly responded with made baskets and free throws to stay in front.
MDCC shot 57 percent in the second half against 37 percent shooting for the Rangers.
Jitaurious Gordon scored 23 off the bench and
Kendrick Fountain added 11 but they were the only two Rangers in double figures.
MDCC was led by Quintaures Boatman with 21 points (13-of-15 from the FT line), while Brandon Kimble added a double-double.
For a second straight game, the foul and free throw discrepancy went in favor of the home team. Northwest has been whistled for a ridiculous 67 fouls over the last two road games at East and Delta, while the opposition has combined for 22 less fouls and shot 31 more free throws.
The Rangers will look to snap a three-game losing streak in division play on Thursday when they welcome Holmes (11-4, 3-1) to Senatobia.
