Solid Pitching Sets up Ranger Sweep over Holmes

SENATOBIA – Two complete game shutouts from Harley Smith and Katie Brownlee lifted Northwest to a sweep of Holmes on Thursday afternoon, winning by a pair of 1-0 and 2-0 finals.

Northwest improved to 15-13 overall and 7-9 in MACJC competition, while Holmes dropped to 15-15 and 6-12 in the conference.

Game 1  Northwest 1, Holmes 0 (8 inn.)

It took an extra inning to break a scoreless tie, but Alexis McShan came through in the clutch, knocking an RBI-double to right-center to drive in pinch-runner Cameron Hall for the 1-0 victory.

Northwest threatened to score a couple times before extra innings, with the best chances coming in the fifth and sixth innings. A pair of infield pop-ups would end the Rangers' chances, however, setting up McShan's eighth-inning walk-off.

Smith went the distance for the Rangers and improved her record to 8-8, striking out four Holmes batters against one walk and four hits. Smith becomes just the seventh Ranger in the program's 18-year history to eclipse 20 career wins.

Northwest outhit Holmes 7-4 in the contest, with seven Rangers finishing with one hit apiece.

Game 2  Northwest 2, Holmes 0

Brownlee surrendered three hits and two walks while striking out six batters in a 2-0 victory, solidifying the sweep against Holmes.

Much like the first contest, McShan delivered once again, this time providing an RBI-single to left in the bottom of the first to score Smith for a 1-0 lead.

Holmes had chances to score in both the fifth and seventh innings, but the Lady Bulldogs left a pair of runners stranded in both innings.

Northwest got some breathing room in the bottom of the sixth, where Sarah Taylor's RBI-groundout to short allowed Marlee Ray to score from third, pushing the lead to 2-0.

The Rangers got five hits in the nightcap, led by a 2-for-3 day from Smith.
