SENATOBIA – Northwest and 19th-ranked Itawamba split a baseball doubleheader Tuesday night at Jim Miles Field, with the Indians taking an 8-2 game one win behind a 15-hit attack and the Rangers responding with a 6-0 shutout game two win behind
Harrison Sandridge's complete game.
Northwest moved to 20-10 overall and 10-6 in conference play, currently tied for fifth in the standings. Itawamba moved to 21-9 and 7-7 in the MACJC.
It's the first of five straight doubleheaders in Senatobia after a 12-game road trip. Northwest will host 16th-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast on Friday, April 13 (was Saturday) at 1/4 p.m.
Game 1 – Itawamba 8, Northwest 2
Hunter Hughes and
Reed Logsdon dueled it out on the mound for six innings before the Indians got to the Ranger bullpen and scored five runs in the seventh to put the game away.
Scoreless through four, Itawamba got on the board in the top of the fifth on LaBryant Siddell's RBI-single. Northwest tied the game in the bottom half on
Hunter White's RBI-single after Will Brook's leadoff double.
Hunter Nabors' leadoff double in the sixth for ICC, one of his four hits on the day, helped the Indians rally for two runs on a groundout and Kyle Crigger single to make it 3-1.
Drew Hurst relieved Logsdon to start the seventh and ran into trouble early. Three walks in the inning led to a two-run homer by Nabors, Jackson Lancaster RBI-double and back-to-back RBI-singles to blow open an 8-1 game.
Reed Harding got a 5-4-3 double play to get out of the seventh and tossed 2.2 innings of one-hit ball.
Ben Van Cleve's RBI-double to center in the eighth made the final 8-2.
Itawamba out-hit Northwest 15-8 in the opener, with 10 of the Indians' hits not leaving the infield.
Dakota Dailey, Brooks and White combined for six of the Rangers' eight hits.
Game 2 – Northwest 6, Itawamba 0
Sandridge's third career complete game and fifth straight quality start lifted the Rangers to their 20th victory of the season in the nightcap.
Van Cleve's RBI-single in the first plated Dailey after a leadoff walk to give Northwest an early 1-0 lead.
The Rangers then busted it open with a four-run third, using
Brant Blaylock's RBI-groundout,
Hayden Leatherwood's RBI-single and a two-run homer by Brooks, to make it 5-0.
Sandridge continued to deal on the mound, allowing just three Indians to reach second base all game. He scattered five hits, six strikeouts and two walks on 104 pitches.
Brooks Boolos reached on an error in the sixth and later scored on an error to make it a 6-0 final.
