Softball Splits at Meridian

MERIDIAN – Behind a complete-game performance from Harley Smith and timely hits from Morgan Gresham, Northwest won its opener at Meridian 8-1 before a heartbreaking 7-6 loss in the nightcap to split the Friday doubleheader at Tommy McDonald Field.

Northwest moved to 5-11 overall and 1-7 in conference play with the split.

The Rangers will enjoy a week off before returning home March 17-19 for six games in three days in Senatobia.

Game 1 – Northwest 8, Meridian 1

Trailing 1-0 after three, a leadoff double from Smith, game-tying RBI-double from Katie Brownlee and two-run single from Morgan Gresham in the fourth gave Northwest its first lead and they'd score eight unanswered for the victory.

Elexis Brice's sac fly to right gave Meridian a 1-0 lead in the third.

Sarah Johnson blasted her first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to right-center in the fifth, to make it 5-1.

Northwest tacked on a single run in the sixth on Gresham's RBI-double and scored two more in the seventh.

Smith (3-6) scattered five hits, one run, a walk and two strikeouts in a complete game.

Alexis McShan, Gresham and Johnson all had multiple hits in the win.

Game 2 – Meridian 7, Northwest 6

Northwest led 4-0 after one and by three runs heading into the final frame before Meridian plated four runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh for a 7-6 walk-off win to stun the Rangers.

Kaitlyn Parrish entered for Meridian with the bases loaded in the first, after Hayleigh Rogers didn't record an out, and was superb for the Lady Eagles in seven innings. Parrish allowed just three hits, two unearned runs and struck out six to keep Ranger hitters off balance.

The Lady Eagles scratched one across in the second and scored two in the fourth to get within 4-3 after four.

Scoreless the next two frames, the seventh inning provided plenty of drama and excitement.

Shelby Wilson reached on an error and later scored on an error and Brownlee doubled to center with two outs to put the Rangers on top 6-3 heading to the bottom half.

Meridian (2-13, 1-7 MACJC) used five hits in its half of the seventh, including a triple and two doubles, and caught several lucky breaks what should've been an out at third and dropped foul ball to rally for a 7-6 come-from-behind win.

Brice tripled, followed by two-out RBI-doubles from Chandler Moore and Abbe Bates, to tie the game at 6-6 before Tiana Boutte's slow grounder to the right side scored Miracle Crosby all the way from second on a ball that never left the infield.

Johnson, Brownlee and Smith split time in the circle in the loss, with Smith falling to 3-7 after allowing four earned runs off six hits in 2.2 innings. Parrish got her first win of the season for MCC.
