Rangers Use Long Ball to Sweep at Holmes

GOODMAN – Northwest used a combined eight home runs, and added four doubles and a triple for good measure, to sweep Holmes 11-2 and 11-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Charlie Donald Field.

Winners in 10 of its last 14 games, Northwest improved to 14-8 overall and 4-4 in MACJC play. Holmes dropped to 15-9 and 1-7 in conference play.

Freshman Reed Logsdon tossed a career-high 7.2 innings in the opener, allowing one earned run on just three hits, while sophomore southpaw Harrison Sandridge went six strong innings in the nightcap.

Northwest will continue its 12-game road swing on Friday, March 30 at Copiah-Lincoln. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. Links to live video and live stats can be found on nwccrangers.com.

Game 1 – Northwest 11, Holmes 2

Northwest hit a season-high six home runs and Reed Logsdon, Brody Catt and Cody McGarrity allowed a combined four hits on the mound in an 11-2 win in the opener.

Will Brooks got the home run party started in the second inning with a no-doubter to left to make it 1-0 Rangers.

Leading 3-0 in the sixth, Hayden Leatherwood's three-run blast to right-center scored Brant Blaylock and Tanner Leggett to make it 6-0.

Holmes got a run back in its half of the sixth, using a fielder's choice from Cole Johnson.

Leggett sent a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left in the seventh to make it 8-1 before Hunter White (8th), Blaylock (9th) and Leatherwood (9th) all followed with home runs the final two frames.

Logsdon (4-1) scattered three hits, two runs (one earned), a strikeout and three walks in 7.2 innings. Catt tossed a scoreless inning and McGarrity recorded the final out.

Northwest out-hit Holmes 12-4, with Leggett, Blaylock and Leatherwood combining to go 7-for-14 with nine RBIs.

Brandon Renfrow (0-2) took the loss for Holmes, allowing six runs on seven hits in five innings.

Game 2 – Northwest 11, Holmes 4

A five-run top of the first and 10 runs through the first three innings was more than enough run support for Sandridge as he picked up his third straight win on the hill to help the Rangers sweep.

Blaylock hit a towering two-run homer off the light pole to make it 2-0 in the first, followed by Brooks Boolos' two-run single and a Justin Milam RBI-single.

Blaylock homered again in the second and Ben Van Cleve and Boolos added RBIs to make it 8-0.

Holmes scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth frames to get within the 11-4 final.

Northwest churned out a season-high 15 hits, led by three apiece from Leatherwood and Leggett. Blaylock was 2-for-2 with two homers, two sac flies and five RBIs.
