TANNER, Ala. – Sophomore
Brant Blaylock's three home runs and six RBIs powered No. 7 Northwest to a 6-3 game one win before Calhoun rallied behind Colin Chamblin's 13 strikeouts for a 6-1 victory in the nightcap to split the Tuesday twinbill at Warhawk Field.
Northwest moved to 4-4 with its fourth straight split to open the year, while Calhoun moved to 4-9 on the season.
Weather permitting, Northwest and Calhoun will face each other again on Sunday, March 4 at Jim Miles Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
Game 1 – Northwest 6, Calhoun 3
Calhoun jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings thanks to Justin Booker's two-run homer, but it was Blaylock's career game and solid pitching from
Ian Hawkins and
Reed Harding that helped the Rangers to the game one win.
Blaylock's first home run tied the game at 2-2 in the third. Still tied in the fifth, three consecutive singles from
Justin Milam,
Tanner Leggett and
Dakota Dailey made way for Blaylock's three-run bomb to make it 5-2 Rangers.
After Jameison Stennis' RBI-single cut it to 5-3, Blaylock hit his third and final home run, a solo shot, to make the final 6-3.
Hawkins and Harding allowed just four hits between the two and combined for nine strikeouts in seven innings. Hawkins improved to 2-0 and Harding picked up his second career save.
Game 2 – Calhoun 6, Northwest 1
Behind Chamblin's 13 strikeouts and a 4-for-4 game for Will Sipes in the leadoff spot, Calhoun knocked off Northwest in the nightcap to earn a split.
The Warhawks scored all six of their runs in the first three innings, with the Rangers' only run coming off
Tanner Booth's solo home run in the fourth.
Calhoun out-hit Northwest 11-5, with three players finishing with multiple hits.
