#18 Northwest Downs Southwest 85-69 in MACJC Quarterfinals

SENATOBIA – Paced by Therrell Gosier II's third double-double of the season and sixth of his career and three other Rangers in double figures, Northwest downed Southwest Mississippi 85-69 in the MACJC Quarterfinals Monday night at Howard Coliseum.

Northwest won its 10th straight game to improve to 21-2 overall, while the Bears fell to 16-8. The teams will meet in the opening game of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament next week in Clinton.

Southwest built an early 11 point lead and led for the opening 17 minutes until a 13-3 Ranger run gave Northwest its first lead, 32-30, with 3:01 left in the first half.

Alex Shepard's layup extended the lead to three before late SMCC free throws made it a 36-35 Ranger lead at the break.

Jitaurious Gordon and Gosier started to heat up in the second half, combining for 10 straight points as part of a 13-4 run to put Northwest up 48-39 with 16:23 to play.

A steal and assist by Justin Flakes and ensuing one-handed slam by Tremont Robinson extended the Ranger lead to 72-55 and Northwest never looked back the rest of the way. Southwest got within single digits only once the final 11:58.

Northwest shot 47 percent the second half and forced 11 Bear turnovers that led to 13 Northwest points.

Behind Gosier's 18 points and 13 boards, Gordon poured in 21, Shepard added 12 and T. Robinson finished with 11. Roydell Brown led SMCC with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Northwest will host division-rival Northeast on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. in the MACJC Tournament Semifinals.
