SENATOBIA – Sophomore
Dakota Dailey went 3-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs and
Ian Hawkins picked up his first career win in a 13-1 run-rule victory and a 5-4 extra-inning loss in Tuesday's doubleheader against Southwest Tennessee at Jim Miles Field.
No. 7 Northwest will host four more doubleheaders before its first road swing later in March. Weather permitting, the Rangers will host Rend Lake College on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m.
Game 1 – Northwest 13, Southwest Tennessee 1 (7 inn.)
The bats were kind to the Rangers in the first matchup, as Northwest was aided by five home runs in the 13-1 win.
Freshman
Hayden Leatherwood got the scoring started for the Rangers in the bottom of the first with an RBI-single through the right side that scored
Tanner Leggett. A passed ball would allow another run from Dailey and a 2-0 lead after one complete.
Northwest kept the bats alive in the second, as freshman
Tanner Booth smashed his first career homer to left-center, a solo shot that would extend the lead to 3-0. A bases-loaded walk to Van Cleve and a fielder's choice RBI from
Brant Blaylock brought in two more runs, pushing the Rangers' lead to 5-0.
Left center proved to be the sweet spot for Northwest hitters, as sophomore
Justin Milam teed off on a homer there in the bottom of the third, followed by
Grant McMinn's solo shot over the wall in the fourth.
Northwest kept the home run party going in the fifth inning, as Dailey and
Will Brooks hit a pair of two and three-run shots to left field to solidify the 13-1 victory.
Sophomore left-hander
Ian Hawkins (1-0) went five solid innings, scattering three hits, three walks and three strikeouts. His lone earned run came in the fifth on a wild pitch that scored Blake Daniels from third, the Saluqis' only run of the contest.
Northwest tallied 13 hits in the contest, with two apiece from Leggett, Dailey, Leatherwood, McMinn and Milam.
Game 2 – Southwest Tennessee 5, Northwest 4 (8 inn.)
Barrone Porter's sac fly to right field brought in the winning run for Southwest Tennessee in the eighth inning, as the Saluqis denied Northwest the sweep with a 5-4 extra-inning victory.
Jacob Nobles put the Saluqis on the board quickly in the top of the first, driving in Porter from third on an RBI-groundout.
Northwest responded in the bottom of the second after Brooks scored off
Baron Davies' RBI-single to the pitcher, tying the contest at 1-1.
Southwest Tennessee added a pair of runs in the next two innings, as Nate Sumner scored on a wild pitch in the third and then reached on an error in the fourth that allowed Blake Donels to score, pushing the Saluqi lead to 3-1.
Although Blaylock's solo homer to right center pulled Northwest within a run in the bottom of the fourth, the Saluqis again had an answer in the fifth with Tucker King's RBI-single to center.
Northwest had its best opportunity to regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth as the Rangers had one out and the bases loaded. Van Cleve then delivered the tying run, as his single through the left side produced two runs and tied the contest again at 4-4.
A strikeout and a groundout would end the inning, however, preventing the Rangers from regaining the lead as the tie remained in place after the seventh, forcing extra innings.
Southwest Tennessee capitalized in the top of the eighth, taking the 5-4 lead on Porter's sac fly to right.
Northwest threatened in the bottom of the frame, as Van Cleve's double to left center and a walk to Blaylock put runners on first and second for the Rangers with no outs. A double play and a strikeout would end the Rangers' efforts, however, leaving the Saluqis with their first win of the season.
Freshman
Reed Logsdon (0-1) took the loss for Northwest but only allowed three hits, a walk and one earned run through three innings of work.
Jake Tyrone got the start for the Rangers and threw five strikeouts through five innings, allowing three earned runs and a pair of walks.
Northwest was outhit 9-6 in the contest and committed three errors. Van Cleve led the Ranger hitters, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
