COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. – Needing overtime for a second meeting this season, host Southwest Tennessee took advantage of a hand ball in the box in the 94th minute and connected on the ensuing penalty kick to take a 1-0 victory on Wednesday night.
Southwest improved to 5-6-1 while the Lady Rangers fell to 3-7-1.
Both teams had a shot to take the lead in regulation in the second half, but
Caitlan Dew's attempt for Southwest and
Cheyenne Smith's shot for Northwest smacked off the crossbar to keep the match scoreless.
The Lady Saluqis were able to win the match just 3:08 into extra time, with a hand ball in the box awarding a penalty kick. Dew fired a shot into the left corner of the net, that was inches away from being saved by
Angel Hailey, for the game-winner.
Southwest owned a small 18-13 shot advantage and Northwest was whistled for 11 fouls against only four for the home team.
Northwest will start the second half of division play on Friday, Oct. 5 at East Central.
