BOONEVILLE – Northwest led Northeast by 11 points with just over 13 minutes to play but couldn't hold on down the stretch, as the host Tigers scored 19 of the game's final 27 points to knock off the Rangers 80-78 Monday night.
Northeast improved to 13-6 overall, 5-3 in the north, while Northwest dropped to 12-6 and 5-3 in division play.
Dakota Dailey's 3-pointer from the left wing gave Northwest its largest lead, 60-49, with 13:05 to play before the Tigers started to chip away.
Northeast cut it to six on Shunn Buchan's jumper, 67-61, with 7:26 left but Northwest quickly responded with
Alex Shepard's 3-pointer to make it 70-61.
The Rangers would then miss six of their next seven shots to let Northeast put together a 17-8 run to tie the game at 78-78 with 33 seconds left.
Northwest had opportunities to extend its lead in the final 2:34 but missed the front end on three consecutive two shot fouls, which came back to haunt them.
After getting the ball across half court, Northeast called timeout with 11.4 seconds left to setup its game-winner. Buchanan drove two feet inside the free throw line and tossed up a jumper that hit off the back of the iron and backboard and in with 2.6 seconds left.
Leroy and Shunn Buchanan combined for 46 points on 16-of-33 shooting to lead Northeast. Northwest had four scorers finish in double figures, led by 18 points and seven boards from
Therrell Gosier II and 15 from
Keelin Jackson.
Northwest shot 51 percent on the evening against 40 percent for Northeast but committed 25 turnovers that allowed the Tigers to own a 21-7 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Rangers will close out the week at division-leading Holmes on Thursday, an 8 p.m. tipoff in Goodman.
