SENATOBIA – Freshman
Chrissah Shaw flirted with a triple-double, finishing with a career-high 22 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, and Northwest hit a season-high 16 3-pointers to knock off division-leading East Mississippi 86-81 Thursday night.
Northwest improved to 10-6 overall and 4-3 in the north, while EMCC fell to 10-6 and 5-2 in the division.
Both teams shot over 52 percent on the evening, but it was a 3-point clinic for Northwest that helped the Lady Rangers avenge a 72-53 loss in Scooba earlier this season.
Tied after one quarter, a barrage of 3-pointers from Shaw,
Shelbi Buford and
Averyale Joy with the second quarter winding down helped Northwest end the half on a 17-3 run to take a 43-30 lead.
EMCC, who settled for mid-range jumpers most of the first half, began to pound the ball inside in the third quarter and quickly cut the lead to just four, 48-44, thanks to a 9-0 spurt.
Janesha Johnson scored five straight for Northwest to end the quarter and pushed the lead back to 63-53.
The Lady Rangers were able to stay hot in the fourth quarter, connecting on 8-of-13 shots from the floor, to keep the game out of reach and walked away with a huge division win.
Northwest's bench provided a big spark, outscoring EMCC 25-4, led by nine apiece from Buford and
Deja Faulkner. Joy and Johnson finished with 15 apiece in the starting lineup.
EMCC was paced by Tyeisha Juhan's 25 points, 22 from Quantesha Patterson and 18 from Anissia May.
Northwest will hit the road next week, traveling to Northeast on Monday and Holmes on Thursday.
