Rangers Blank Coahoma 35-0 in Final Tune-up for EMCC

SENATOBIA – Jack Abraham threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns, Monta Thomas and Quarderman Sloan each scored on the ground and the Ranger defense held a fourth straight opponent under its season average in total yards in a 35-0 blanking of Coahoma Thursday night at Bobby Franklin Field.

Northwest, ranked 11th nationally, won its 14th consecutive home game in improving to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the north division, while Coahoma fell to 1-5 and 0-4 in division play.

Since a 27-24 setback at Itawamba, Northwest has outscored its last three opponents 109-13 with a pair of shutouts.

A 79-yard touchdown strike from Abraham to Jamario Dixon on the Rangers' opening drive of the night set the tone as Northwest went over 500 yards of total offense for a third time this season.

The lead was 14-0 minutes into the second quarter, with Thomas scoring from nine yards out to cap an 8-play, 91-yard drive. Northwest only threw one pass on the drive and Sloan's 37-yard carry down to the Coahoma 22-yard line setup the quick score.

After a fourth down stop at the Coahoma 49-yard line, Northwest drove the distance of the field in 2:50, with Abraham's 17-yard touchdown strike to tight end Pro Wells, the first of his career, making it a 21-0 lead at the break.

The Rangers would score on their opening drive of the third quarter, with Abraham hitting JaVonta Payton from 19 yards out, and again late in the fourth quarter on a five-yard score by Sloan, to make the final tally 35-0.

Northwest's defense picked up its second shutout of the year and second consecutive over Coahoma in holding the Tigers to 157 total yards on 57 plays.

Abraham, the reigning MACJC and NJCAA Offensive Player of the Week, completed 12-of-17 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns. Wells had a team-high five grabs for 85 yards and a score.

Sloan, Thomas and Kevin Perkins combined for 190 yards on the ground and two rushing touchdowns, with Sloan going for 87 yards on 11 carries.

Trey Mitchell was 13-of-27 for 119 yards with two interceptions and was sacked twice.

Jonathan Jones led the Rangers with seven tackles, while Hal Northern, a recent Ole Miss commit, had six tackles, 3.5 for loss, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble. Malik Sanders and Marlon Character Jr. had both Ranger interceptions.

Cecil Cherry had a game-high 16 tackles for Coahoma, followed by Rejohn Franklin with a dozen.

Northwest will play host to No. 1 East Mississippi next Thursday, Oct. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Bobby Franklin Field. The Rangers bring a 14-game home winning streak into the matchup, while EMCC has won 17 straight games overall dating back to last season.
