DECATUR – Northwest showed no signs of a hangover from its big win over then-No. 1 East Mississippi last week, as the Rangers rushed for a season-high 387 yards and held East Central to 70 total yards in a 38-0 shutout of the Warriors Thursday night.
Northwest won its fifth straight game overall and 11th consecutive over East Central to move to 6-1 on the season. The Warriors dropped their sixth straight game to fall to 1-7 on the year.
Quarderman Sloan eclipsed the century mark for the fifth time of his career, rushing for a season-high 129 yards and three touchdowns, and
Kevin Perkins added 89 yards and two touchdowns on only six carries, as all five Ranger scores came on the ground in the first half.
East Central's failed onside kick attempt to start the game gave Northwest the ball at the Warrior 45-yard line and they immediately made it hurt with a five-play scoring drive and Perkins touchdown in 1:42.
Northwest would score on all three of its first quarter possessions, adding a career-long 59-yard touchdown run from Perkins at the 9:52-mark and Sloan's first of three scores at the 3:59-mark, to go ahead 21-0 after one.
A muffed Warrior punt to start the second quarter, caused and recovered by
Brandin Echols, led to a
Drake McCarter 22-yard field goal to make it 24-0.
Behind the big guys up front, Sloan would lead the Rangers to two more scoring drives to close out the first half, scoring from two and nine yards out.
Northwest outgained the Warriors 345-44 the opening 30 minutes and led 38-0 to trigger a running clock the second half.
Each team had just three possessions in the third and fourth quarters combined, with
Billy Kimble getting a bulk of the work on the ground and
Robert Wilcke under center.
Starter
Jack Abraham was 10-for-16 for 107 yards, hitting
Cole Rotenberry a team-high four times for 49 yards.
The Ranger defense boasted its third shutout in five games, holding EC to three first downs and 70 total yards (seven rushing on 20 attempts).
Keith Brown Jr. led all Rangers with eight tackles, while
Devonte Lloyd added five tackles and
D.J. Reed chipped in two tackles, a forced fumble and sack.
Northwest will travel to division-rival Northeast on Thursday, Oct. 26 to close out the regular season. Kickoff is set for 6:30 from Tiger Stadium. Links to live video, audio and live stats can be accessed at nwccrangers.com for the contest.
