WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. – Northwest rallied from an eight-point deficit in the game's final 41 seconds, using back-to-back 3-pointers from
Brandon Cranford, but couldn't complete the comeback as Terrandus Smith iced the game with two of his 23 free throw attempts to give ASU Mid-South an 80-76 win.
The Greyhounds improved to 11-8 with the win, while Northwest fell to 10-5 overall and 1-3 on the road this season.
Smith finished with a game-high 31 points and 10 rebounds, connecting on an unheard of 21-of-23 free throw attempts on the night. Northwest, as a team, attempted only 23 free throws all night.
In a contest that featured nine ties and nine lead changes, the difference in the game was on the glass. ASU Mid-South owned a 60-35 edge overall and pulled down 29 offensive rebounds to Northwest's nine.
The Rangers led by a game-high eight points at the 9-minute mark of the first, but the score was tied 34-34 at the half.
Neither team led by more than six for the opening 15 minutes of the second half until the Greyhounds mounted a 10-2 run to pull ahead 75-63 with 1:58 to play. Senatobia native Trevor Banks jumpstarted the run with a layup before Smith ended it with six in a row.
An 11-1 Ranger run over the ensuing 1:44, however, made it a one possession game, 76-74, with 14 seconds left. Cranford's pair of 3-pointers, a tip-in by
Alex Shepard and
Trey Skelton 3-pointer gave Northwest new life.
Two Smith free throws were answered by Shepard's layup with six seconds left before a Ranger foul allowed Smith to close it out on the charity stripe.
Northwest was led by
Dakota Dailey with 13 of his team-high 17 points in the first half, followed by Cranford's 11 and a career-high 10 points from Skelton.
The Rangers will try and bounce back on Monday, traveling to division-leading Itawamba for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
