SENATOBIA – The visiting Holmes Bulldogs put on a shooting clinic Tuesday at Howard Coliseum, finishing the night at a 59 percent clip with four scorers in double figures to run away with an 86-64 win over Northwest in a north division clash.
Holmes improved to 8-6 overall, 2-1 in the north, while Northwest fell to 8-4 overall and 1-2 in division play.
Northwest built a game-high 14-6 lead in the game's opening five minutes, using baskets from four different Rangers, including six early points from
Isaiah Austin.
The Bulldogs' hot shooting began on Trevais Spencer's 3-pointer seconds later that started a 16-0 Holmes run, giving the visitors a 22-14 lead. They would close the half on a 7-1 spurt to take a 41-29 lead at intermission.
Connecting on six straight free throws and a
Dante Sterling layup, Northwest closed to within nine at the 17:06-mark of the second half before a monster 23-6 Holmes run put the game well out of reach.
After shooting 54 percent in the first half, Holmes shot 65 percent in the second on 17-of-26 aim. Northwest shot 35 percent from the floor for the game and never got within double digits the final 16:25.
Despite a 39-6 free throw discrepancy in favor of Northwest, the Rangers hit only 23-of-39 attempts in trying to stop the Bulldogs' hot momentum.
Spencer and Mikkel Norment led the Bulldogs with 20 points apiece. Northwest was led by
Dakota Dailey's 13 and 11 from
Brandon Cranford.
Northwest will look to bounce back on Thursday, traveling to Mississippi Delta (6-7, 1-1 north) for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
