SENATOBIA – A pair of first half goals from freshman
Lauren Snyder proved to be the difference for the Northwest women's soccer team on Friday afternoon, as the Lady Rangers defeated Southwest Mississippi 2-1.
Northwest improved to 2-4-1 on the season with the non-division victory, while SMCC fell to 2-8 overall. The Lady Rangers also got their revenge from a 2-1 loss in Summit earlier this season.
Snyder put Northwest on top 1-0 in the 5th minute, beating a pair of defenders downfield off a long free kick from
Sierra Lasher and sneaking it past Jennifer Solis bottom shelf.
Just beyond the 15-minute mark, it was Snyder again taking a long ball off a feed from
Kimbre Watros to net her third goal of the season and extend the Northwest advantage to 2-0.
Southwest made its mark in the 29th minute as Taylor Laurent connected with Nohemy Giraldo on a perfect delivery in the box, bringing the Lady Bears within 2-1.
Neither team would score again the ensuing 61 minutes, despite Southwest ending with a 22-4 shot advantage, including 11-4 on goal.
Reigning MACJC and NJCAA Division I Goalkeeper of the Week
Ivy Cook finished the day with 10 saves to run her season total to 66.
Northwest will have a week-long break before returning to action next Friday, Sept. 30 at Meridian (3-5). First kick is scheduled for 1 p.m.
