SENATOBIA – Sophomore
Heath Griffith's 5-for-6 afternoon paced a Ranger offense that combined for 18 runs off 25 hits in a pair of run-rule victories, 9-0 and 9-1, over Mississippi Delta Tuesday.
Northwest improved to 13-7 overall and 7-5 in conference play while MDCC dropped to 3-21 and 0-12.
(Game 1) Hailee Kolwyck's one-out grand slam in the first inning set the tone for a big offensive afternoon and the Rangers scored all nine of their runs in the first four innings for the shutout victory.
Kailey Walker's first collegiate home run in the second, a three-run shot to right, put Northwest on top 7-0. Griffith added a two-run double in the fourth to cap a 3-for-3 game.
Kolwyck scattered three hits, five strikeouts and two walks in three innings of work to earn her third win in the circle.
Sallie Rose Carver and
Tori Luke combined to toss the final two frames.
(Game 2) Mercedes Johnson's RBI-double in the first gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead after one before the Rangers responded with nine unanswered for a second run-rule victory.
Olivia Owen's infield single tied the game at 1-1 in the second before
Annah Catherine Storey's RBI-single down the right field line and a fielding error put Northwest on top 3-1 after two.
A single run in the third and three more in the fifth set the stage for a five-inning victory. After two fielder's choices erased a pair of runs at the plate, a bases-loaded walk to Griffith and single up the middle from Kolwyck provided the walk-off hit for the 9-1 win.
Ashton Needham tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Luke (6-4) who earned the win in three frames of one-run, one-hit softball.
Ten different Rangers combined for 14 hits in the game. Griffith, Kolwyck, Owen and Storey had two apiece.
Northwest will return to action on Friday, March 25 at Hinds. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
