Ranger Softball Sweeps Holmes in MACJC-Opener

SENATOBIA – Freshman Allison Williams went 4-for-5 in two games with an RBI and run scored, as Northwest opened conference play on the right note Monday, sweeping Holmes by a pair of 3-1 finals.

Northwest improved to 8-2 overall (2-0 MACJC) while Holmes fell to 5-7-1 and 0-2 in conference play.

(Game 1) Sophomore Erin Claire Stegall broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI-single to center field, giving the Rangers a 1-0 lead. Things would only get better in the next frame, as Northwest scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a single up the middle from Sallie Rose Carver and a sac fly from Tori Luke, expanding the Rangers' lead to 3-0.

Holmes responded in the top of the sixth with Hayden Grantham's solo home run to left field but that was as close as the Lady Bulldogs would get in the contest.

Luke tossed a complete game for the Rangers and scattered six hits and one run on the day, while improving to 5-1 on the season.

Williams had two of the Rangers' six hits while four other players finished with one hit apiece.

(Game 2) Though Holmes struck early on the scoreboard with a run in the first inning, the Rangers responded with a three-run third inning, sealing the sweep with a 3-1 final.

Northwest got the scoring started with an RBI-single to left field from Williams that allowed Carver to score and tie the game at 1-1. The tie didn't last long, as Luke's RBI-single down the left side and Hailee Kolwyck's double to right field drove in two more runs, giving the Rangers the two-run lead and the win.

Kolwyck went 2-for-3 at the plate in Game 2 with two hits and one RBI, while also pitching all seven innings, striking out five batters and allowing just two hits on the day to garner the first win of her Ranger career.

Northwest will be back in action on Friday, Mar. 4 as the Rangers travel to Pearl River for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
