SENATOBIA – A pair of second half goals from Itawamba was the difference on Friday afternoon, as Northwest fell 2-0 to the visiting Lady Indians in the final match of the 2016 season.
Northwest ended its season at 2-9-1 overall and 0-7-1 in the north division. Itawamba improved to 6-7-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the division and earned its first playoff appearance since 2012.
Defensive play was the story for both teams in a tight first half, with Northwest holding a low 5-4 shot advantage.
Itawamba began to turn things up a notch in the second half, however, as Malarie Scott put the Lady Indians on the board off an assist from Allie Barnett in the 54th minute.
ICC was able to push its lead to 2-0 just a few minutes later, as Morgan Dennis found Summer Jensen in the 61st minute.
Northwest had some opportunities to close the gap in the second half, including two corner kick attempts and a shot from
Gaby Villatoro that was blocked, but were unable to capitalize on either attempt.
Both teams ended the match with 10 shots apiece, with Itawamba holding an 8-5 on-goal advantage. Sophomore
Sierra Lasher and freshman
Madison Thrasher accounted for four of the Lady Rangers' five shots on-goal.
Ivy Cook came away with six saves for the Lady Rangers, while Ana Branch finished with five stops for Itawamba.
