Lady Rangers Rally after Slow Start to Down ASU Mid-South

SENATOBIA – The Northwest women's basketball team overcame a shaky start to post a 66-45 victory over ASU Mid-South Thursday night for its fourth consecutive victory.

Northwest improved to 11-2 overall while ASU Mid-South fell to 5-13. The Lady Rangers swept the season series and have never lost to the Lady Greyhounds in 12 all-time meetings.

MSCC (5-13) opened the game on an 11-1 run, taking advantage of five Lady Ranger turnovers and scoring easy baskets on the other end.

After subbing out its five starters to try and find some energy off the bench, the starting five returned and scored the next eight points, capped by a Brianna Williams 3-pointer.

MSCC pushed back in front 16-9 at the 9:26-mark of the second quarter before Northwest finally took control. Janesha Johnson's 3-pointer on the Lady Rangers' next possession jumpstarted an 18-3 run and put Northwest ahead by eight. They led 29-23 at half.

After exchanging baskets the first few minutes of the third quarter, another big Lady Ranger run put the game out of reach. Northwest scored 17 of the next 23 points and held MSCC without a field goal for nearly six minutes to pull ahead 50-33.

A 9-0 run to start the fourth put Northwest ahead by a game-high 25 points. Reserves Alexis Thomas, Hayley Davis, Destiny Gardner and JaKayla Johnson all scored baskets in the period.

Northwest held MSCC to 6-of-31 shooting in the second half and 22 percent for the game.

Johnson's 16 points led all scorers, followed by Williams with 13. Kelsey Brown finished with seven points and seven boards while Sara Lytle added six points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. Kimberly Reed led MSCC with 11 points and 11 boards.

Northwest will step back into conference play Monday, Jan. 25, playing host to division-leading EMCC (11-2, 5-0) at 5 p.m.
