ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore outfielder
Janie Turner of Northwest Community College has been named to the 2015 Capital One Academic All-District 1 First Team as voted upon by more than 3,000 members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Turner is the third-ever selection in softball for Northwest and the 15th overall selection in school history. Linsey Hebert and Hillari Plummer both were named academic all-district during the 2012 season.
Off the field, the Grenada native has a 4.0 GPA in pre-radiology, the only student-athlete on the 15-person first team to boast a perfect grade point average. Turner is a two-year Phi Theta Kappa member, member of Mu Alpha Theta, 2014 NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete and has been on the President's List both terms.
On the field this season, Turner hit .429 in 32 games played, scoring 19 runs and adding a double, three RBIs and 10 stolen bases. Her two-year total of 25 stolen bases is tied for second in school history.
The Academic All-District 1 Team is made up of student-athletes from the NAIA, Canadian and 2-year ranks.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
