CLINTON – All five Jones County starters finished in double figures and the Lady Bobcats shot 51 percent for the game as they ran away with a 94-68 win over Northwest in the NJCAA Region 23 Semifinals Friday night at Mississippi College's A.E. Wood Coliseum.
With the win, JCJC (19-7) advances to Saturday's championship game against Itawamba, while Northwest's season came to a close at 19-7 overall
– its most wins since the 1997-98 season.
JCJC turned 23 Lady Ranger turnovers into 33 points and out-shot them 51 to 41 percent, the difference in the game.
Northwest built an early 9-3 lead in the game's opening 3:42, forcing JCJC to call a timeout.
Aspriona Gilbert and
Bethany Lytle combined for all nine points during the spurt and would finish with a combined 36 points on the night.
JCJC responded with a 10-2 run over the next 3:37 to pull ahead 13-11 as four different Lady Bobcats scored a basket.
Five straight points from sophomore
Jacquelyn Brooks put Northwest back in front momentarily, 16-15, with 10:49 left in the half, but it was all JCJC after that.
The Lady Bobcats closed the first half hitting 10 of their final 17 shots to take a 43-35 lead at the break.
The game went back-and-forth the opening 9 minutes of the second half before JCJC started to pour it on. A 26-5 run over a 7-minute stretch turned a 63-55 game into a 29-point game with 3:38 to play.
Six Lady Bobcats finished in double figures, led by 18 from Alyson Johnson and 15 from Starla Daggans.
Gilbert had 21 points and 11 rebounds to post her 13th double-double of the season, while B. Lytle finished with 15 points and one assist to give her 100 dimes on the season.
Brianna Williams added seven points off the bench.
