PHILADELPHIA – Led by sophomore
Trey Wilkinson for a second straight tournament, who finished in a tie for eighth, and freshman
Alex Taylor, who placed 11th, Northwest finished in fourth out of 10 teams in the third MACJC spring event of the season at Dancing Rabbit Golf Club.
Northwest finished with a two-day total of 624 (311-313), nearly 10 strokes better than its last tournament finish, but dropped from second to fourth on the final day.
"Overall, I felt like we played as good as we could have played," volunteer assistant
Guy Purdy said. "The course itself was soaking wet, but our guys played through that and they're excited about their performance. We're hosting the next tournament and I feel like we're headed in the right direction."
Meridian ran away with the tournament, firing a 593 to finish 25 strokes ahead of second place finisher Gulf Coast (618). Copiah-Lincoln (620), Northwest and Northeast (628) rounded out the Top 5.
For Northwest, Wilkinson's 75-76 and Taylor's 74-78 helped them both place in the Top 15. Playing as an individual,
Walker Wilkinson shot an 81-77 to place 19th and
Hayes Carr's 82-77 was good enough for 23rd.
Scott Hensley (80-82) and
Alan Larson (84-88) closed things out with a 33rd and 53rd place finish, respectively.
Northeast's Alex Tull shot a 72-71 to shoot 1-under-par and win overall top medalist honors.
Northwest will return to the links April 6-7, hosting its annual tournament. The opening 18 holes will be played at Wedgewood Golf Course in Olive Branch while round two will be at Back Acres Country Club in Senatobia.
