WESSON – Sophomore
Trey Wilkinson tied a career-low round of 75 at Eagle Ridge on Saturday and followed that with a 78 on Sunday at Wolf Hollow to pace Northwest to a fifth place finish out of 10 teams in the second MACJC spring event of the season.
Northwest finished with a two-day total of 633 (329-304), improving by an impressive 25 strokes in the final round to jump up three spots from eighth into fifth.
"We shot the third best round of the tournament on Sunday after getting off to a rough start on Saturday," volunteer assistant
Guy Purdy said. "Hopefully that will help turn us around a little bit before the next tournament. Our main focus and goal right now is to make the Region 23 Tournament at the end of April."
Gulf Coast finished first with a 595, followed by Copiah-Lincoln (603), Meridian (619), East Central (623) and Northwest (633), who rounded out the Top 5.
Wilkinson's two-day total of 153 helped him finish in a T-11th, his best tournament to date as a Ranger. Following Wilkinson were
Alex Taylor in a T-15th (154),
Alan Larson and
Hayes Carr in a T-33rd (163) and
Scott Hensley in a T-45th (169).
Walker Wilkinson, playing as an individual, finished in a T-48th with an 86-84.
Carr and Taylor had the two biggest turnarounds of the tournament for Northwest, improving by 11 and 10 strokes, respectively, over the final 18 holes at Wolf Hollow.
Northwest will return to the links March 23-24 at Dancing Rabbit in Philadelphia.
