SENATOBIA – Holmes snatched a win from Northwest in the final seconds of an overtime game on Thursday night at Howard Coliseum, scoring the game's final seven points for an 89-88 victory.
Northwest fell to 15-3 overall and 5-2 in the north, while Holmes improved to 12-6 overall and 3-4 in the division. The Lady Rangers had their seven game winning streak snapped after allowing an opponent to score 80 points for the first time this season.
Holmes was off to an early lead until the 13:12-mark when
Kelsey Brown made a layup in the paint to tip the score in the Lady Rangers' favor, 16-15. This was the first of six lead changes and seven ties throughout the game.
Northwest built its lead out to as many as nine, 36-27, with 3:53 left in the half before a late Lady Bulldogs rally made it a 42-38 lead at the break.
Sara Lytle led Northwest with 11 points in the half, connecting on a pair of free throws to close the first period.
Northwest led the whole second half, taking its largest lead, 61-53, at the 10:02-mark after a layup from Lytle.
But the Lady Bulldogs were able to battle back and keep it a two possession game down the stretch and eventually force overtime. With Northwest leading by three and the ball with 13 seconds left, Holmes forced a turnover that ended with a layup and free throw by Aja Williams to tie the game at 79-79.
Going into the overtime period, Holmes seemed to be at a disadvantage with two post players fouling out and no one to cover
Aspriona Gilbert under the basket. Gilbert scored the first three points in overtime and Northwest led 88-82 with 1:50 remaining.
Carmesha Nalls then took over for Holmes, scoring the final seven points of the game as part of the Lady Bulldogs' 7-0 run, and making the game-winning layup with 7 seconds left for the win.
Northwest outshot Holmes 38 to 34 percent on the night, but the Lady Bulldogs capitalized off 28 offensive rebounds that led to a 21-7 edge in second chance points.
Gilbert had another career-high night with her eighth double-double, featuring 29 points and 12 rebounds. S. Lytle scored 24 points and added eight rebounds, going 4-for-11 from behind the arc.
Tekevanna Young added 10 points and
Bethany Lytle grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out five assists.
Four Lady Bulldogs scored in double figures, highlighted by Aja Williams' 27 points. Nalls followed Williams with 24 points, Tiffany Jones added a monster double-double with 16 points and 18 rebounds and Minyone Hill scored 11.
Northwest will try to rebound on the road against Itawamba on Monday, Feb. 2. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
