Rangers Fall Short at East Mississippi 77-70

SCOOBA – Four East Mississippi players scored in double figures and the Lions connected on 11 3-pointers to secure a 77-70 victory over Northwest Monday night at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum.

Northwest fell to 8-7 overall and 2-4 in the north, while East Mississippi improved to 12-4 overall and 5-1 in division play.

The Rangers scored the game's first five points and hung with the Lions until the 13:43-mark, where East Mississippi went ahead 14-12 and never trailed again the rest of the night.

After pulling within two, EMCC closed the half on a 9-2 run to take a 40-31 lead at the break.

The Lions shot 44 percent (7-for-16) from beyond the arc and held Northwest to 32 percent shooting from the floor in the opening 20 minutes. 

Kieth Broome Jr. led Northwest with 11 points in the half, going 7-for-8 from the free throw line.

East Mississippi continued to control the game in the second half and took a 52-37 lead with 15:11 to play after one of Antonio Finley's four 3-pointers.

The Rangers battled back to within five, 59-54, with 7:59 to play but missed nine of their next 11 shots to fall back down by double figures and eventually lose by seven.

EMCC outshot Northwest 42 to 33 percent on the night, holding the Rangers to 1-of-18 from 3-point range. Northwest also left 16 points at the free throw line, shooting 54 percent for the night (19-for-35). 

Broome finished with a game-high 21 points off the bench, while De'Sean Dockery scored 12 points and Ashton Woodson added 10 rebounds and eight points.

Jahyde Gardiner led the Lions with 19 points and 14 rebounds, followed by Chris Rhoney with 13, Antonio Finley with 12 and Daniel Simmons with 10.

Northwest will try to rebound at Howard Coliseum on Thursday, Jan. 29 against Holmes. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
