SENATOBIA – Highly recruited by Northwest out of Lake Cormorant High School, speedster Carla Avant has decided to transfer to Northwest from Blue Mountain College and play softball for the Rangers in 2015.
"I wanted to be closer to home and there are a lot of girls I went to high school with who play for Northwest," Avant said. "I'm going to work hard this year and hopefully transfer somewhere next year. I want to get my grades right and play to the best of my ability."
As a true freshman at BMC last spring, Avant unofficially hit .271 with two doubles, a home run and 10 RBIs to help the Lady Toppers to a 24-25 overall mark.
The 5-foot-3 outfielder from Hernando was named all-metro, all conference and all-state her junior and senior seasons at LCHS. She was awarded the best offense award her junior and senior years and was named a Scholar Athlete. As a junior, Avant received the "BankPlus Player of the Week" award and helped lead the Lady Gators to a state runner-up finish.
Northwest is coming off a 29-14 season, north division runner-up finish and state playoff appearance.
