Box Score 2 SCOOBA – Northwest picked up two, huge wins at East Mississippi on Monday, knocking off the Lady Lions by 7-4 (9 inn.) and 6-4 finals to take its first sweep in Scooba since 2005.
Northwest improved to 19-10 overall and 10-4 in the division while EMCC fell to 19-15 overall and 8-6.
The opening game of the day needed extras, as EMCC rallied to score two runs in the fifth to tie it at 3-3.
Northwest led 2-1 after the first inning thanks to an RBI-triple by
Alex Barrett and
Kendall Alford RBI-groundout. EMCC scored in its half on an RBI-single by Abby Roberts.
The teams exchanged single runs in the eighth, with both runners placed at second as part of the international tie-breaker rule coming around to score and make it 4-4.
But in the ninth, Northwest finally put it away with a little help from the home team. Two errors, coupled with RBIs by
Andi Barrett, Alford and
Micalah Beall gave the Rangers a 7-4 lead and win.
Kiley Dunagan was absolutely superb in 8.2 innings of relief, scattering four hits, three runs (all unearned) and a career-high 13 strikeouts to move to 3-3. Dunagan entered for
Roxanna Kimes after just one out in the first and went the distance.
Eight Rangers combined for 12 hits in the win, led by
Katelyn Westbrook,
Haley Vance, Beall and Al. Barrett with two hits apiece.
In the finale, Northwest scored single runs in the first and third and jumped out to a 6-1 lead after six.
EMCC tried to make it interesting in its final at-bat, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh, to make it 6-4. An RBI-single for Jade Albritton and two-run home run for Roberts chased Beall and allowed
Lindsey Shaw to pick up her first save of the year in 0.2 innings of work.
Beall (4-1) went 6.1 innings for the win, scattering 11 hits, four runs and four strikeouts.
EMCC out-hit Northwest 12-5 in Game 2, but the Rangers were able to pull out the victory and sweep.
Northwest will host 15th-ranked Itawamba at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2.
