Box Score 2 SENATOBIA – In a makeup doubleheader with Arkansas Baptist on Monday afternoon at Jim Miles Field, Northwest scored a season-high 18 runs in a 6-inning win in Game 1 before being held scoreless in a 5-0 loss in Game 2 for a split.
Northwest moved to 14-10 overall while Arkansas Baptist moved to 18-9. The teams split the season series 2-2.
In a wacky, 2-hour and 44-minute Game 1 which saw 13 combined pitchers, 26 runs, 23 hits, a grand slam, overruled grand slam and the game end on back-to-back wild pitches, Northwest was victorious 18-8.
The Rangers jumped out 3-0 in the first on RBIs by
Kramer Hollenbach,
Chase Clark and
Stephen Sexton and held the three-run advantage into the fourth.
After stranding the bases loaded in the third, the Buffaloes came alive offensively in the fourth and plated six runs off seven hits to take their first lead at 6-3. Michael Maddox and Corky Welch each delivered two-run hits that chased starter
J.R. Miller and reliever
Ryan Seawright.
But Northwest came right back with five runs of its own in the bottom half to retake an 8-6 lead, using back-to-back home runs from
Jay King (grand slam) and Hollenbach with two outs. The Rangers would add four more runs in the fifth, which should've been seven had Clark's grand slam not gotten overturned. Clark hit a line drive over the fence in right, clearly a fair ball as called by the homeplate umpire, but the base umpire overruled his call. Clark drew an RBI hit-by-pitch later in the at-bat that made it 12-6.
The Buffaloes got two back in the sixth on a solo home run and RBI-double before Northwest added six more in its half to close out a run-rule win.
The top four hitters in the Ranger lineup combined to go 8-for-13 with 12 RBIs and 11 runs scored.
Northwest used five pitchers and
Davis Brown picked up his first collegiate win in 1.1 innings of relief.
Justin Vincent tossed a gem for ABC in a two-hit shutout in the finale as the Buffaloes had 11 hits by seven different players to provide the offense behind him.
Northwest will host its fourth Top 20 opponent of the season (third in the Top 10) on Wednesday when No. 5 East Mississippi (18-6, 5-1) comes to town. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
