Box Score 2 SENATOBIA – Northwest was on the wrong end of a doubleheader sweep on Friday, as visiting Northeast knocked off the host Rangers in two close games by 2-0 and 4-3 finals.
Northeast improved to 11-19 overall and 6-4 in the north while Northwest dropped to 15-10 and 6-4. The Lady Tigers have now won seven of the last eight meetings overall.
Chelsea Buntin tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout for Northeast in the opener and scattered six strikeouts to improve to 6-8 in the circle.
Kiley Dunagan was equally impressive in the circle for Northwest, scattering three strikeouts and four hits in four innings of shutout ball in a no-decision.
Micalah Beall (2-1) tossed the final three innings and allowed both Lady Tiger runs off a pair of hits.
Scoreless into the seventh inning, Northeast got a leadoff single and sac bunt to put the go-ahead run in scoring position. A passed ball, followed by a fielder's choice by Shannon Goode allowed Avery Springer to score the eventual game-winning run. The Lady Tigers added a second run a batter later on Buntin's RBI-double.
Northeast jumped out 2-0 in the third inning of Game 2, taking advantage of three Ranger errors in the frame, two in left field. Trenisha King and Bianca Chagolla made it hurt with a pair of RBI hits and the Lady Tigers never trailed the rest of the way.
Northwest cut the deficit in half in the fifth thanks to
Jessica Holliday's sac fly to left, scoring
Drennan Nemnich after a leadoff single, but the Rangers stranded the bases loaded and couldn't find the tying run.
The deficit grew to 4-1 an inning later when Whittney Gee hit an RBI-triple to right-center and Abigail Rish grounded out to second to score another.
Northwest missed another opportunity in its half of the sixth, again stranding the bases loaded.
Lindsey Shaw singled, Nemnich was hit by a pitch and
Haley Vance walked to load them up with only one out before back-to-back fly outs to short.
Kendall Alford made the final margin 4-3 after she belted a two-run home run to left-center with one out in the seventh for her first collegiate long ball.
Chagolla improved to 4-8 in the circle for Northeast in the win while Buntin, the game one winner, picked up her second save of the year. Shaw took the loss in six innings of work to fall to 2-2 on the season.
Northwest out-hit Northeast 7-6 but stranded eight in the game.
The Rangers will try and get back on the winning track on Tuesday, March 25 when they host winless Mississippi Delta (0-16, 0-6 north) at 2 p.m. at Ranger Field.
