Box Score 2 GOODMAN – Northwest and Holmes split a softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, with the Rangers holding on for a 3-2 win in the opener and the Bulldogs scoring three in the sixth to steal a 5-3 Game 2 win.
Northwest moved to 15-8 overall and 6-2 in the north, dropping a spot into second place in the division standings behind 7-1 Itawamba. Holmes moved to 9-14 overall and 4-4 in the division.
Holmes scored first in its opening at-bat, with Char Gordon hitting a two-out double into right-center to score Michelle Gregory who also doubled in the inning.
The Rangers tied it at 1-1 in the third, also scoring with two outs, when pinch runner
Tori Turnipseed scored from second after
Alex Barrett reached on an infield error.
A leadoff single for
Andi Barrett in the sixth allowed the sophomore to come around and score two batters later on
Haley Vance's RBI-single through the left side and
Janie Turner would score on an error in the seventh to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead. Turner ran for
Peyton Clanton who led off the inning with a pinch hit single, the eventual winning run.
Holmes got a run back in the seventh to pull within 3-2 and had the tying run at second when
Micalah Beall struck out Kelsey Kelly to preserve the win.
Kiley Dunagan tossed 4.1 innings of five-hit ball in a no-decision, scattering six strikeouts and an unearned run, while Beall threw the final 2.2 to earn the win and move to 2-0 on the year.
Holmes again went ahead first in the nightcap before Turner's two-run infield single in the second allowed
Drennan Nemnich and Vance to score for the 2-1 lead.
Northwest led 3-2 after five on
Alyssa Dean's RBI-single to center.
But errors, as they did for both teams in the doubleheader, came back to haunt Northwest in the sixth. Katherine Pennington reached on an E1 to start the inning and scored the tying run on Keana Wash's RBI-single. Gregory's sac fly, what should've been the final out of the inning, plated the go-ahead run two batters later and Holmes added another on a wild pitch for the 5-3 win and split.
Brett Whitlock tossed a complete-game, four-hitter for Holmes to earn the win and move to 6-5, while
Jessica Holliday took the loss in 0.1 innings of relief to fall to 3-2 in the circle.
The teams combined for 13 runs in the doubleheader, just three earned due to seven errors.
Northwest returns home on Friday, March 21 to host Northeast in a 2/4 p.m. doubleheader. The games were moved up a day from Saturday due to approaching rain.
