Box Score 2 SENATOBIA – Northwest scored a combined 22 runs off 27 hits and tallied 10 more stolen bases to sweep a doubleheader with Jackson State CC on Monday by 15-1 and 7-4 finals.
Northwest improved to 12-5 overall and 9-1 at home while Jackson State fell to 4-12.
The Rangers didn't waste any time in the opener, scoring five runs off five hits and an error to take a 5-0 lead after one.
Alyssa Dean led off the inning with a single and later scored off an RBI by
Alex Barrett.
Andi Barrett,
Katelyn Westbrook and
Roxanna Kimes all added RBIs in the inning.
Northwest added a single run in the second, two in the third and then broke it wide open with a seven-run fourth thanks to big two-run singles by
Jessica Holliday and
Kendall Alford.
JSCC's lone run came in the top of the fifth off a throwing error.
Eleven different players had a hit in the Rangers' season-high 17-hit attack, led by Kimes, Dean, Alford and the Barrett sisters with multiple hits.
Lindsey Shaw (2-0) got the win in three innings of work, striking out three and allowing no runs while
Peyton Clanton gave up an unearned run in tossing the final two innings.
JSCC jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the finale, highlighted by Kirsten Henry's two-run home run to right in the third, before Northwest scored seven unanswered over the final four innings to close out the twinbill sweep.
Northwest cut the deficit to 4-1 in the third on An. Barrett's RBI-single but stranded the bases loaded to end the frame. Kimes' RBI-groundout, followed by
Drennan Nemnich's RBI-double to center with two outs in the fifth pulled the Rangers within 4-3 after five.
Micalah Beall, Holliday and
Kiley Dunagan combined to throw the final 4.1 innings in relief of Kimes and held JSCC to just one run off four hits with six strikeouts to keep the game close.
Ashlynn Hardee, who held the lead for JSCC in the circle after five, was pulled to start the sixth for Madelyn Mercer. Northwest took advantage of the pitching change and proceeded to score four runs off four hits in the inning to rally for the come-from-behind win — their fourth of the season.
Holliday (2-1) got the win in an inning of relief while Dunagan picked up her first collegiate save.
Northwest pushed its stolen base total up to 75 in the victories, second in the nation only to Phoenix College. The Rangers have already broken the school record of stolen bases in a season of 61, set in 2009, and are on pace to steal an unprecedented 200 for the year.
