Rashon Coleman scored 13 of his career-high 21 points in the second half and Northwest outscored East Mississippi by 10 in the period to stun the Lions on Sophomore Night, 86-83.
Northwest improved to 12-8 overall and 8-3 in the north and can finish no worse than third in the division. EMCC had a season-long, 7-game winning streak snapped in falling to 16-5 overall and 7-3 in the north.
Bubba Skelton continued his winning ways against the visitors, moving to 16-6 overall against the Lions in his 10-year tenure in Senatobia. The teams split the season series, with EMCC winning 85-83 in Scooba and the Rangers taking a 86-83 win tonight.
Northwest led twice in the game's opening 1:03 but trailed the remainder of the half. EMCC closed the half on a 7-2 run, with Justin Kinsey scoring the final five at the free throw line.
EMCC led 49-42 at the half behind 52 percent shooting.
Trailing 53-42 with 17:58 to play, Coleman hit two big 3-pointers and
Sharwyn McGee got a tough bucket at the rim to help jumpstart an 18-7 run to pull the game even at 60-all.
Aston Morton scored back-to-back buckets to give the Rangers a 65-61 lead at the 10:23-mark, and Northwest led the rest of the way.
The lead grew to a game-high seven, 79-72, with 4 minutes to play before EMCC pulled within a point late on five consecutive points by Jacolby Mobley. Coleman then put the icing on the cake with 7.8 to go with two free throws for the win.
Behind Coleman's 21, Morton had 13 points,
De'Sean Dockery added 12 and
Gavin Robinson chipped in nine points and six boards in 17 minutes.
Five Lions finished in double figures, led by 19 from Mack Foster.
Despite being out-rebounded 51-33, Northwest forced 20 EMCC turnovers on the night and committed a season-low four themselves against 16 assists – the stat of the night.
Northwest closes out the regular season on Thursday in Goodman. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
