Aspriona Gilbert posted her second career double-double with 20 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to help lead Northwest over Holmes, 61-59, in the north division opener for both teams Thursday night.
Northwest improved to 8-1 overall (1-0 north) while Holmes had a seven-game losing streak snapped in falling to 7-2 overall (0-1 north). It marked the Lady Rangers' first win in Goodman since Feb. 18, 2010.
Holmes was in control of the game early, jumping out to a 10-1 lead. A 7-0 run from the Lady Rangers minutes later, highlighted by
Bethany Lytle's 3-pointer, tied the score at 18-18 with 7:11 left in the half.
Both teams exchanged leads two more times before going into the half with Northwest leading 30-29.
The Lady Rangers opened the second half on a 13-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at 43-30 but Holmes was able to battle back and tie the score at 49-49 with 6:17 to play.
Trailing 53-52 with 3:16 to play after a pair of free throws by Aja Williams, B. Lytle and Gilbert each hit a free throw before a huge 3-pointer by
Camia O'Neal made it 58-54 to help secure the road win for the Lady Rangers.
Holmes outrebounded Northwest 57-44, including 22 offensive rebounds, leading to a 17-8 edge in second chance points. Gilbert had a game-high 12 boards while
Jacquelyn Brooks snatched nine rebounds.
Behind Gilbert's 20-point night, B. Lytle had 10 points and O'Neal added nine points and six rebounds.
Holmes was led by Williams' 16 points, 13 from Carmesha Nalls and 10 from Minyone Hall.
Neither team shot the ball well on the night, with Northwest shooting 32 percent against 31 percent for Holmes.
Northwest will face Itawamba (6-2, 1-0) at home on Monday, Dec. 8 at 5 p.m. to continue north division play.
