Box Score BOONEVILLE – Northwest opened the 2014-15 basketball season in style on Monday afternoon at the Northeast Tipoff Classic, running away with a 96-71 win over defending NJCAA Region 23 Champions, Baton Rouge.
Northwest (1-0) won its fourth consecutive season-opener, while Baton Rouge fell to 1-2.
Four Lady Rangers scored in double figures and all but one player on Northwest's 15-man roster scored at least one basket on the afternoon. Northwest outscored BRCC's bench by an overwhelming 46-18 margin.
Neither team led by more than four in the game's opening 14 minutes, but it was Northwest who closed the first half on a major 25-8 run to take control of the game with a 51-34 halftime lead.
The margin grew to as many as 27 points late in the second half and BRCC never got closer than 18.
Northwest shot 47 percent for the day and held BRCC to 33 percent shooting. The Lady Rangers also dominated on the glass with a 54-33 edge, including 20 offensive rebounds.
Jacquelyn Brooks pumped in her first career double-double with 11 points and 12 boards, while
Aspriona Gilbert had 14 points and both
Camia O'Neal and
Kristina Mays chipped in 11.
Northwest will face off with Southwest Mississippi at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4 to close out the Classic.
