WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. – Despite five players scoring in double figures Monday night for Northwest, it wasn't enough to push past Mid-South and Kaylon Tappin's 32-point night, assisting the Greyhounds in a gritty 98-89 overtime victory.
Northwest fell to 6-2 while Mid-South improved to 6-4 on the year.
Northwest held a 13-point lead over Mid-South during the first half of the game, with a brief lead change at the 7:56 mark where Mid-South led 27-26. After two free throws by
De'Sean Dockery, the Rangers went back in front 35-33.
Northwest led at half by 13 with a 55-42 advantage.
Out of the half, Mid-South scored 11 unanswered to pull ahead 58-57 at the 13:42 mark. The margin barely stayed in Northwest's favor until the score was tied at 64-64.
The two teams then battled, tying the score four more times, before regulation ended at 83-83.
With an early 6-2 run in overtime, Mid-South secured the lead that Northwest was unable to battle back from. Mid-South outshot Northwest 64-14 percent (2-for-14) during overtime.
Sharwyn McGee led Northwest's scoring with 19 points, followed by four other Rangers in double figures, including
Ashton Woodson (14),
Sebastian Petty (12),
Courtney Shannon (11) and
LaJustin Anderson (10).
Mid-South had two double-double performances recorded by Tappin (32 points, 15 rebounds) and Tasmania Jones (15 points, 10 rebounds). Justin Harris (10 points) also scored in double figures.
The Greyhounds outrebounded the Rangers 68-47, helping Mid-South own a 36-12 advantage in second chance points.
Northwest dominated with a season-high 13 blocked shots compared to Mid-South's four.
Alex Arnold contributed four blocked shots while McGee and
Aston Morton added three apiece.
After a week off, the Rangers head to Goodman on Thursday, Dec. 4 to take on Holmes for the first north division game of the season for both teams. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
