Bears Hand Rangers First Loss of Season

Box Score SUMMIT – Sophomores Ashton Woodson and De'Sean Dockery scored 26 and 21 points, but it wasn't enough, as Southwest dealt Northwest its first loss of the season, 84-76, on Day 1 of the Coca-Cola Classic. 

Northwest fell to 5-1 in defeat while Southwest improved to 1-3 on the year.

Despite being outshot 60-46 percent in the first half, Northwest held a slight 38-37 lead. Dockery scored 17 of his season-high 21 in the first half and Woodson had 11.

With the Rangers leading 46-41 minutes into the second half, Southwest caught fire and put together a 24-6 run to take its largest lead of the game at 65-52 with 10:53 left in regulation.

Northwest rallied to get within one at 71-70 with 4:42 to play, but couldn't get back in front. An 8-2 Bears run put it away and they were able to ice the game at the free throw line.

Southwest outshot Northwest 59-44 percent on the night and hit 12 more free throws. 

Four Bears finished in double figures, led by 25 from Jaylen Moore and 19 from Lafayette Rutledge.

Woodson and Dockery shot a combined 18-for-27 (.667) while the rest of the team was 10-for-36 (.277).

Northwest won the rebounding battle 36-25 with 18 offensive rebounds against four for Southwest.

Northwest will close out the Classic at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday against Copiah-Lincoln (2-2).
