MERIDIAN – The Northwest women's soccer team will be making its second playoff appearance in as many seasons and sixth all-time on Tuesday at Meridian. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. in the MACJC Quarterfinals.
Northwest enters the contest at 9-4-4 overall, winning eight games in back-to-back seasons for just the second time in school history. The Lady Rangers' 11 shutouts are a new school record.
Northwest is led offensively by freshman
Abigail Morales who has 13 goals and four assists for 30 points. She also leads the team in shots (64), shots-on-goal (36) and game-winners (four). Freshmen
Tristan Kitchens and
Jameka Barr have added five and four goals, respectively.
Between the posts, freshman
Ashley Nelson has been a brick wall with 11 shutouts and a 9-3-4 record. Nelson has a .935 save percentage (3rd in the NJCAA), a 0.47 GAA (9th) and 116 total saves (14th) in 1,520 minutes.
Head coach
Levi Nunnally is 17-8-6 (.645) in his first two seasons and is trying to win double digit games for the first time since 2006, also the Lady Rangers' last playoff win.
Meridian is making its first MACJC postseason appearance since 2007 and enters the contest with a 9-7-1 overall record and winners in eight of their last 12 games overall.
Freshman Danielle Shows, the reigning MACJC Offensive Player of the Week, finished the regular season with a team-leading 13 goals, which ranked 3rd in the MACJC. Sophomore Kayla Phillips has added 11 goals and seven assists.
Chanler Pickering has played every minute in net for Meridian this season, totaling 106 saves with six shutouts, a 1.89 GAA and .763 save percentage.
Entering his second year as head coach for the Lady Eagles is Mike Smith. In his first season at the helm, coach Smith led Meridian to a 12-5-1 record and a runner-up finish in NJCAA Region 23.
