Box Score SENATOBIA – Trailing by 10 midway through the second half, freshman
Sharwyn McGee scored 13 of his game-high 24 points down the stretch to help Northwest come away with a hard-fought 91-81 win over Coahoma.
Northwest improved to 9-7 overall and 5-2 in the north, while Coahoma fell to 5-12 overall and 3-4.
The Rangers jumped out to a 22-12 lead midway through the first half as freshman
Courtney Shannon came off the bench to hit a pair of 3s for the spark.
That double figure lead held true for most of the remainder of the half until the Rangers turned it over on 6 of 7 possessions and Coahoma caught fire the final 4:53. The Tigers trailed 40-30 but hit six of their final eight shots to cap a 16-1 run and lead 46-41 at the break.
Coahoma pushed its lead to a game-high 60-50 with 12:25 to play.
Northwest trailed for all but a little over 3 minutes in the second half but rallied late thanks to strong play by McGee and clutch baskets from
De'Sean Dockery and
Rashon Coleman. Dockery's fastbreak layup with 3:25 to play put Northwest ahead, 78-77, for the first time in the second half.
From there, Northwest outscored Coahoma 13-4 to close with a 10-point victory.
McGee posted new career-highs in points (24) and rebounds (16), followed by 12 points from
Dajon Reno, 10 from Dockery, nine from Shannon and eight apiece from Coleman and
Gavin Robinson.
Darcee Carson led Coahoma with 23, followed by Markevius Brown with 20 and Billy Jackson with 11.
Coahoma outshot Northwest 47 to 45 percent for the night, but the Rangers shot 52 percent in the second half in outscoring the Tigers 50-35. Northwest was also 10-for-17 from long distance.
