Mays, Sutton Guide Rangers Past Bulldogs

Box Score SENATOBIA – Freshman Kristina Mays tied a career-high with 23 points and sophomore Carshava Sutton pumped in her fifth double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds as Northwest knocked off Holmes Monday night at Howard Coliseum, 69-61.

Northwest snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory, improving to 9-5 overall and 3-3 in the north. Holmes fell to 5-12 overall and 2-4 in the division standings.

Trailing 37-31 at the break, Northwest opened the second half on a major run for a second consecutive outing. The Lady Rangers outscored Holmes 22-8 to start the period and turned a six-point deficit into a 53-45 lead with just under 8 minutes to play in regulation.

Northwest stretched the lead to a game-high 13 at the 5:39-mark as Mays and Sutton continued to take over in the post. Jacquelyn Brooks also added several key baskets and blocks on the way to tying career-highs in both categories.

Northwest held Holmes to just 26 percent shooting (9 for 35) in the second half as they outscored the Lady Bulldogs 38-24 and also shot 45 percent themselves.

Behind Mays' 23 points and Sutton's 19, Anna Rosenbaum added 10 points and five boards and Brooks had nine points and three blocks.

Carmesha Nalls had a game-high 29 points on 11 of 22 shooting for Holmes, followed by Desirae Harris with 10 and Taylor Johnson with eight points and 12 rebounds.   

Northwest returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 30, playing host to Coahoma (1-13, 0-6 north).
