SENATOBIA – Northwest head baseball coach Mark Carson and the Rangers picked up their third signee for the 2015 class on Wednesday with the addition of infielder/outfielder Jamell Newson from Magnolia Heights.

"Jamell is a very athletic young man that will bring speed and a nice bat to our club next year," Carson said. "He's thrived in a great program like Magnolia Heights and we hope that will transition well over here."

Newson (5-9, 165) helped the Chiefs to a perfect 37-0 record in 2013 and second straight MAIS AAA Division II State Championship by hitting .303 with nine doubles, a home run and 15 RBIs. He also stole 28 bases and had a .490 on-base percentage.

Newson is a two-time All-MAIS Selection, including a first team nod his sophomore season, and was named one of the Top 20 Underclassmen to Watch in Mississippi by The Clarion-Ledger.

Magnolia Heights became just the third team in the state of Mississippi to go undefeated in a season and finished No. 8 in the country in the final MaxPreps Xcellent 50 National Baseball Rankings.
