Outfielder Dex Herrington Signs with Delta State University

SENATOBIA – Northwest sophomore outfielder Dex Herrington of Senatobia has signed to play for legendary head baseball coach Mike Kinnison and the 2012 NCAA Division II South Regional and Gulf South Conference Champions Delta State University for his final two seasons.

A two-time First Team All-MACJC selection, Herrington played and started in all 90 games for the Rangers the last two years and closed his career as a .345 lifetime hitter. Herrington became just the 18th player in school history to eclipse 100 career hits, doing so with a solo home run in Game 2 in a best-of-three playoff series against Hinds.

"We've liked Dex for a long time with his athletic ability and versatility," 14th-year assistant coach Rodney Batts said. "He can play anywhere on the field. Recruiting needs change as the year goes along and we felt like we needed a guy like him to provide depth and a chance to earn a starting position."

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound product of Senatobia High School helped the Rangers to a 25-23 overall mark and a second place finish in the MACJC North Division with a 16-8 record. A 46-game starter in 2012, Herrington led the team in home runs (eight) and RBIs (32), ranked second in hits (49) and runs scored (38) and was third in doubles (eight) and stolen bases (18-of-19).

As a freshman in 2011 Herrington hit .347 with five home runs, five triples, 14 doubles and 40 RBIs.

"As athletic as he is, we'll try him at multiple positions," Batts said. "He has great speed and a good arm and we'll do everything we can to get him on the field. I know he was also interested in playing football here at one time, but it seems like baseball is his first love and we're happy to have him join our program."

DSU competes in the Gulf South Conference and just punched its ticket to the Division II World Series for the first time since 2005. The 10th-ranked Statesmen are currently 46-13 overall and have posted anastonishing 29 consecutive winning seasons.
