SENATOBIA – Sophomore Cameron Thomas and freshman Chad Cupples of Northwest will tee it up at the NJCAA Men's Golf National Championships May 22-25 in Plymouth, Ind., both qualifying a week ago.
Thomas and Cupples will return to nationals for Northwest who last had a qualifier in Garrett Tidwell back in 2010. Tidwell finished in 38th place with a 14-over-par 302 at Palm Valley Golf Course in Arizona.
Thomas was the individual medalist with a tournament-low 146 (74-72) at last week's region tournament, earning All-Region 23 honors and also MACJC First Team All-State honors. His scoring average of 74.5 leads the team and is the lowest for a Ranger in the last six years.
A second team all-state selection with a 76.1 scoring average, Cupples carded a two-day 158 (75-83) to finish in a tie for eighth at the region tournament.
Northwest closed the year with five consecutive Top 3 finishes, including two runner-up finishes, but was held without a team win this spring. The Rangers' 307.3 scoring average in 13 rounds marks the lowest single-season team score in the last five years.
