FULTON – Sophomore Casey Baddley tossed a pair of complete-game shutouts and Northwest combined for 20 hits in a doubleheader sweep over first place Itawamba on Tuesday afternoon by 10-0 and 5-0 scores.
Northwest improved to 21-7 overall and 9-5 in the north, sweeping Itawamba on the road for the first time since 2005. ICC dropped to 18-11-1 overall and 11-5 in the division.
Northwest plated six unearned runs in the first inning in the opener and never looked back as Baddley carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and let her offense work. After two quick outs, an error at first started a crazy rally that sent the entire order to the plate and was capped off by Vicki Johnson's two-run triple to center.
Megan Jones' leadoff single in the fifth is all Baddley allowed in the win, with Northwest adding a single run in the fourth and three more in the seventh in a 10-0 rout.
Carlie Jenkins, Malea Dillon and Lauren Riley finished with two hits each as nine different Rangers combined for 12 hits in the contest.
Scoreless through the first three innings in Game 2, Chelsey Gilliam changed that with one swing of the bat in the fourth as she launched her second home run of the year – a two-run no-doubter to left.
Jenkins joined the party in the fifth with a three-run dinger to right – her first collegiate home run – as Northwest stretched the lead to 5-0 and would hold on for the sweep.
Itawamba stranded eight runners in the game, two runners in each the second, third and fifth innings, and never really threatened with only two runners reaching third base.
Baddley closed the day with another complete-game, the 22nd of her career, as she scattered eight hits and a strikeout to improve to a team-leading 8-3 on the season.
Northwest will host Northeast on Thursday at 2/4 p.m. and Holmes on Saturday at 12/2 p.m.
