Northwest Sweeps Southwest Tennessee in 2013 Home-Opener

SENATOBIA – Playing its first home games of the season on Wednesday afternoon, the Northwest softball team rallied for a game one win and capped off a sweep behind a complete-game shutout from Roxanna Kimes to take a doubleheader from visiting Southwest Tennessee by 3-1 and 2-0 scores.

Northwest improved to 5-1 on the young season, while Southwest Tennessee fell to 1-12 overall.

The Lady Saluqis struck first in game one, taking a 1-0 lead in the third. Ali Hare delivered a two-out RBI-single to the shortstop which scored Makayla Rice.

After being held to just two hits the first four innings behind a nice game from Southwest hurler, Haylee Power, Northwest finally found the tying and go-ahead runs in the fifth.

Back-to-back singles by Chelsey Gilliam and Katelyn Westbrook and a sac bunt from Vicki Johnson put both runners in scoring position with one out. A batter later, Malea Dillon drove in the tying run on a fielder's choice, and the throw from third to home sailed wide which allowed Westbrook to come around and score from second to make it 2-1.

Northwest would add an insurance run in the sixth to make the final 3-1, as Casey Baddley led off the inning with a double and later scored on another Lady Saluqi error.

Baddley (1-1, 3.23 ERA) got her first win of the year in five innings of work and struck out six, while Lindsey Shaw tossed the final two innings and didn't allow a hit for her first collegiate save.

Kimes (3-0, 0.78 ERA) tossed another gem in game two to help Northwest to a doubleheader sweep, throwing a complete-game three-hit shutout and retiring 17 consecutive batters at one point.

Single runs in the third and fifth, both off Rachel Kelly RBIs, were the only runs Kimes needed.

Northwest will open MACJC North Division play on Friday at Northeast. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
