Sophomore Leadership Carries Rangers into Region XXIII Semis

CLINTON – Sophomores Charles Eaton and Domonique Harris each scored 19 second half points and Northwest was able to pull away late in the second half for an 83-68 win over Jones County in the Region 23 Tournament Quarterfinals at Mississippi College's A.E. Wood Coliseum.

Northwest improved to 18-7 overall and won its first game at the region tournament since March 9, 2006. Jones County's season came to a close at 17-8 overall.

The victory sets up a very anticipated rematch between MACJC State Champion and 20th-ranked Pearl River (23-4) on Friday, March 8 at 2:30 p.m. The Wildcats edged SU-Shreveport, 64-62, earlier in the day.

Northwest trailed just once on the night, 4-2 with 18:03 left in the first, and was able to shake off poor shooting in the first half with 49 percent shooting in the second half.

Eaton and Harris took over the final 20 minutes, with Eaton scoring all 19 of his points in the second half and Harris scoring 19 of his game-high 25 in the second. They were a combined 16-for-28 from the floor.

DeMarcus McVay had another typical game in a big spot, finishing with 14 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks. The double-double marked his ninth of the season and 14th of his career, while his three rejections helped him become the third player in school history with 100 for a career.

Northwest closed the night with a 55-42 edge on the boards, forced 16 turnovers and out-shot the Bobcats 40 to 35 percent. They also held Jones to 0-for-14 shooting from beyond the arc.

Three Bobcats finished in double figures, led by Detrick Davis with 18 on 8-of-12 shooting.

Northwest and Pearl River will square off in the region semifinals on Friday at 2:30 p.m. Watch the game live courtesy of Pearl River at www.ihigh.com/prcc.
