CLARKSDALE – In a back-and-forth battle that featured 12 lead changes and 10 ties, Coahoma hit 12 3-pointers on the night including the dagger from Stacy Regular with 35 seconds left in regulation to knock off Northwest Monday night, 87-84. | Box Score
Coahoma improved to 9-7 overall and 5-2 in the north division while Northwest had a season-long, seven-game winning streak snapped in falling to 12-4 overall and 5-2 in the north.
The Rangers had a chance to distance themselves in the division standings with a win, however, the loss now puts a three-way tie atop the north with Coahoma, Northwest and East Mississippi all 5-2.
Held without a point the opening 6:01 of the game, Northwest erased an early six-point deficit with a 21-2 run over a 4 minute stretch and led by 13 with 9:52 left in the half. Charles Eaton's 3-pointer jumpstarted the big run that saw five different Rangers score a basket.
Coahoma's 3-point outburst then began at the 8:53 mark.
Alex Thompson hit the first of four 3s in five possessions for the Tigers who responded with a 15-2 run. Rigueson Desorvil hit two during the stretch and Patrick Brown added his first of four on the night.
Both teams exhanged small leads the final 5 minutes before Northwest led 40-39 at the half.
Tied at 55-all with 12:39 to play, Northwest scored 13 unanswered to tie its largest lead of the night. Kenyatta Jones hit back-to-back 3s and then assisted Dajon Reno from beyond the arc to cap the run.
When it looked like all the momentum was in the Rangers' favor, the mood quickly turned.
Northwest turned the ball over four times in five trips and Coahoma capitalized with another barrage of 3-pointers from Thompson and Brown to tie the game up again at 70-all with 7:07 to play.
Tied again for a 10th time in the game at 82-all with 54 seconds left, D.J. Biggs went the length of the floor to give Northwest an 84-82 lead before Regular's 3-pointer from three feet behind the arc helped Coahoma regain the lead by one.
After Brown's two free throws extended Coahoma's lead to 87-84, Northwest had a chance to force overtime but turned it over on two consecutive possessions to end the game.
Thompson and Brown led all scorers with 22 points each, followed by 18 from Jonathan Ankston.
Northwest had four scorers in double figures, led by DeMarcus McVay and Jones with 16 apiece, 15 from Reno and 11 from Domonique Harris. The Rangers closed the night with 22 assists, 10 steals and eight blocks as a team.
The Rangers return to Senatobia on Monday, Feb. 4 against Northeast. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
