Balanced Scoring Lifts Rangers over Tigers

Box Score CLARKSDALE – Northwest had five scorers in double figures, led by sophomore Rashon Coleman with a career-high 17 and Tristan Moore with 17, and the Rangers went on a 26-3 second half run in a hard-fought 83-76 win at Coahoma Thursday night to open north division play.

Northwest moved to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the north, while Coahoma fell to 1-6 overall and 1-0 in the division.

Coahoma led 45-39 at the break behind 51 percent shooting, but it was a 26-3 run for the Rangers midway through the second half that sparked the road win for Northwest.

Trailing 50-40 with 18:48 to play, Northwest scored 18 unanswered to take a 58-50 lead. Coleman and Moore combined to score 20 of the Rangers' 26 points as part of the 26-3 run, capped by a Sharwyn McGee layup to make it a 15-point lead with 9:41 remaining.

But Coahoma wouldn't go away quietly, using back-to-back 3s by AlDario Alexander to quickly trim a 15-point defict down to just four, 68-64, with 6:48 left.

A 17-2 run for the Tigers tied the game at 70-70 with 3:51 remaining before another big 3-pointer by Coleman and ensuing McGee layup pushed the Ranger lead to 75-70 and allowed Northwest to hold on for the win.

Behind 17 from Coleman and Moore, Gavin Robinson had his second career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, De'Sean Dockery added 13 points, six assists and five rebounds and Aston Morton added 10 points and six rebounds.

Coahoma was led by 13 points from Markevius Brown and 10 from Xavier Graves.

Both teams shot 46 percent for the night but Northwest owned a 46-31 edge on the boards (17 offensive) and got 20 second chance and 25 bench points.

Northwest will return to action on Monday, Dec. 9 as they play host to Northeast. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
