Box Score 2 SUMMIT – Northwest had a 3-game winning streak snapped at the annual Southwest Coca-Cola Classic, falling to the hosts 89-72 on Monday and Southern-Shreveport 82-74 on Tuesday.
With the losses, Northwest evened its season record at 3-3.
In a tightly-contested first half against Southwest that saw six ties and 12 lead changes, the Bears pulled away heading into halftime with a 14-5 run to go up 42-32 at the break.
Northwest could never recover the final 20 minutes, falling behind by as many as 29 with 12:02 to play.
The Bears' size continued to dominate down low and also got out in transition that led to 50 points in the paint and 20 fastbreak points.
Southwest had five guys in double figures, led by Troy commit Chris Jones with 16, Xavion Dillon with 11 points and 10 rebounds and UTEP transfer Twymond Howard with nine points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
Northwest shot just 30 percent for the game and was led offensively by
Dajon Reno with 16 points and
Sharwyn McGee with 15 points and nine boards. The Rangers also had a season-low eight turnovers on the night.
The game against SU-Shreveport was equally as back-and-forth, with the teams exchanging 13 leads and seven ties before the Jaguars pulled away late.
Donald Francis and Mark Gray stole the show for SUS, scoring 22 and 24 on a combined 18 of 31 shooting, while Telvin Marshall had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Northwest trailed for most of the first half, but rallied to take its largest lead, 52-48, with 14:02 left.
Gray then took over down the stretch, scoring 11 of the next 13 points for the Jags, capped off by an alley-oop dunk from Francis – one of his 10 assists.
The Rangers got no closer than five the final 4:37 as SUS held on for the win.
Tristan Moore had 19 points to lead the Rangers, followed by nine from Reno and
Chris Harris and eight from
De'Sean Dockery and McGee.
Northwest will return to action on Monday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m., hosting Mid-South.
