WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. – Northwest rode an 11-0 run into halftime and carried the momentum into 52 percent shooting in the second half as they knocked off Mid-South 76-61 Friday night at West Memphis High School's Lehr Arena.
Northwest improved to 7-3 on the year, matching its best 10-game start since the 2009-10 season. Mid-South dropped to 7-9 overall at the halfway point in the season.
In a tightly contested first half in which neither team shot the ball well or led by more than five until the final minute, Northwest scored the final 11 points of the period and got six straight points from Jordan Hulsey to take a 32-24 lead at the break.
Northwest shot 32 percent in the opening half compared to 22 percent shooting from Mid-South.
But freshman Dajon Reno and the Northwest offense took over in the second half.
After Mid-South rallied to tie the game at 40-40 with 14:27 to play, Charles Eaton scored five straight points and Northwest hit 9 of its next 11 shots as part of a 21-6 run to put the game out of reach.
Reno scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half and Domonique Harris scored all 10 of his in the final 20 minutes as the Rangers closed out the double digit victory.
Northwest owned a 58-43 edge on the boards and swatted a season-high 11 shots.
In addition to Reno's career night, Harris (10 points, 10 rebs, 7 assists, 5 steals) and Hulsey (13 points, 11 rebs) each chipped in double-doubles while Eaton added 13 off the bench.
Trevail Lee led all Mid-South players with 18 points on 6 of 22 shooting.
Northwest returns to action next Thursday, Jan. 10 at Arkansas Baptist College.
